What is dabbing ? A new danger

This is the latest reason to be afraid if you have kids.  Be aware what is out there.

Have you ever taken a dab hit? If so, then you are not alone. Dab hits are becoming more and more popular everyday. I remember five years ago only the most dedicated marijuana fans on the West Coast and in Colorado were hip to the dab scene. Now I know people on the East Coast and all over the Midwest that can’t get enough dab hits to keep them satisfied.

One of the first questions people ask me when they have never taken a dab hit before is ‘are dab hits safe?’ It’s a question that was previously hard to answer because there wasn’t a solid scientific review out there. However, a recent scientific review was conducted by Mallory Loflin and Dr. Mitch Earleywine. Below is an overview of how they approached the study, and the conclusion:

Abstract

A new method for administering cannabinoids, called butane hash oil (“dabs”), is gaining popularity among marijuana users. Despite press reports that suggest that “dabbing” is riskier than smoking flower cannabis, no data address whether dabs users experience more problems from use than those who prefer flower cannabis.

Objective

The present study aimed to gather preliminary information on dabs users and test whether dabs use is associated with more problems than using flower cannabis.

Method

Participants (n = 357) reported on their history of cannabis use, their experience with hash oil and the process of “dabbing,” reasons for choosing “dabs” over other methods, and any problems related to both flower cannabis and butane hash oil.

Results

Analyses revealed that using “dabs” created no more problems or accidents than using flower cannabis. Participants did report that “dabs” led to higher tolerance and withdrawal (as defined by the participants), suggesting that the practice might be more likely to lead to symptoms of addiction or dependence.

Conclusions

The use of butane hash oil has spread outside of the medical marijuana community and users view it as significantly more dangerous than other forms of cannabis use.

Never heard of it. Butane hash oil? Sounds dangerous.

it’s just what was weed oil or honey oil, hash oil. Dabbing is the device, the pipe, isn’t it? Personally, I always thought the most satisfying smoke in the world was hash oil dropped into the heater of a cigarette – but that hasn’t changed that much, maybe the oil is stronger than in the past. The serious increase in potency comes with further concentration, “shatters” or “butters.” I have a little shatter pen, it’s a vape pipe for small bits of shatter, a concentrated, best kept frozen puddle of oil. My take is what is in the article – no danger as such, except increased effect and therefore increased tolerance and withdrawal. I get as high as I like to be 24/7, it just takes a lot less time. I do feel I’ve taken a step from pothead towards junkie, though, and I’m hoping to stop again soon.

That’s the stuff. I am a marijuana advocate. Smoke a joint or light up a pipe whenever. This just seems taking nature and making it a bit synthetic. Not sure, I am explaining that right but, stick with what you can grow. It’s just become a rage around here for the past 6 to 8 months. I think “junkie”, I think needles. So sad the epidemic we have with hard drugs. So many kids get off it for a while, think they can do just a little, one more time. They have no clue, being clean makes the drug a poison to your system. No Narcan DEAD !! So sad.

they’re saying the lower vape temperatures really does make it safer . . .

I see. Perhaps it is not more dangerous but “butane” makes me wonder. Who wants to breathe in butane vapors? I get enough of that in work.

I think it’s the process of refinement, the butane, but yeah, I think you can taste it a bit. My shatter sometimes tastes a little like petroleum, which worries me a little – but resin and oil maybe all taste the same, maybe that nasty flavour is in the weed itself at those levels of concentration. I’m not sure yet . . .

I’ve got a tolerance now, I usually want 6 – 8 8 second draws on my pen, but sometimes all the good stuff goes into the first one and sometimes it’s one and done, completely lit. It’s overwhelming at first, how fast you can go from straight to high, kinda scary.

I imagine it is. I’m used to doing an entire joint to get high.

that used to be my standard when I was growing my my own weed, a big fatty to myself, every three or four hours – took me upwards of half an hour every time. Got that down to five minutes now. But I’m going broke . . .

I’m self-medicated – store bought – for a little over $10.00 a day, I think, maybe up to $12.00 – whereas at the amount of bud I used to smoke, I’m sure I’d be into 2 grams at $12.00 each, so there’s a saving, but my habit isn’t really sustainable, it’s putting pressure on things. The savings are from the vape pen maybe more than the concentrate. Shatter’s like $50.00 a gram, but with it and the pipe, there can easily be zero waste, so smoke just blowing away while you’re holding one in.

BTW, this "danger’ business is a science-free talking point from the Just Say No crowd, it’s being shot down everywhere it’s raised. The story from the marijuana advocate side seems to be that weed’s active ingredient is good for you, anti-cancer, so that concentrations remove inactive parts that might not be. So this is an authoritarian zombie lie, that concentrations are “dangerous.” As if nobody ever smoked all day long, maximizing their intake, and as if nobody ever ate a whole brick of hash. (I’ve been told that that hash junkies in north Africa eat like six ounces at a time.)

If you like traditional smoke feel, flavor, and convenience without all the waste of rolling and the complications of vape devices, try a Dug-Out. I’ve used one for over 20 years and have tried many, many methods, but have yet to find anything that works significantly better.

I’ve heard of this but have never tried it. Personally, I’m a ‘purist’ when it comes to weed, and I really enjoy the whole experience. The smell, the feel of the buds, the taste of that first clean bud…aaah, that’s it! But I can see the appeal of the super concentrated oils, butters, etc. Especially if you’re into making edibles; you NEED to know how to produce a high quality butter for that. As far as “danger” is concerned though, the biggest danger is from the process, not the resulting oil. Anytime you have people with little to no education (and, apparently, common sense) handling flammable/combustible materials for purposes other than those for which it was intended, you have a significant chance for “misadventure”.

    March 28, 2016
    1. Neighsayer

Yes, exploding pot stories are pretty common, people trying to make oil. I think it involves alcohol at a boil. I hate to burst any purist bubbles, but I have a story. I was here at the computer in my family room a while back while my kids were watching some dumb weed movie with Snoop Dogg. Snoop’s all about the pure too, or he was, it was always ‘Roll it, Light it, Smoke that shit,’ but in the outtakes at the end of this movie, he tries a vapourizer and you see the light come on, you see his reaction. Again, sorry to tell you, but the whole bud just tastes like the paper it’s rolled in to me now, and all that, ‘this breed,’ ‘this hybrid’ stuff only matters for feel anymore. Concentrates taste a little tarrish, but it makes joints taste like cigarettes by comparison. Mind you, I’m also technology dependent now. When my battery dies, I’m in danger of straightening out. I live with terror every day – but a smoke takes the edge off of it.

      (I know, and causes it . . . damn)

This sounds frightening. Living with the thought of death is mental anguish beyond comprehension. Of course, the older I get, the close death is. It is inevitable. I learned a lot more than informing. I appreciate the honesty.

    2. belladora

Down right sounds scary compared to just using a paper and rolling a joint. The method alone ( with butane) is crazy. To each his own. I do not smoke marijuana but know a few people that do. No, I know a LOT of people that do. They are from 18-85. Guess that is why it is being legalized everywhere. They should have taken alcohol and done a major study on that. It is treated and is extremely harmful to your body. Key is “in moderation”.

      March 29, 2016
      1. fuall

When done properly the vast majority of the butane is removed through the open heating of the product. Butane tends to evaporate and dissipates rather quickly when ‘gently’ heated. Unfortunately there are those that don’t get that it is flammable, and have an even lower understanding of the principles of combustion and the ‘limits of flammability’ for such materials. [Too much heat, have air, go BOOM!] Should have paid better attention in science class kids!

Do you think these kids think “safety first” ? NO, I really doubt it. I can tell you, I have seen people drunk and seen people high on marijuana. I will take chatting with some high any day over drunk. Just sayin’
